Shabbat for 1,000

Shabbat for 1K is one of the biggest nights of the year for JHP. On one Friday evening, more than 1,000 Penn students come together for Shabbat dinner, all across campus. It has become a signature part of Jewish life at Penn.

This past semester, 1,150 students took part across 56 simultaneous dinners hosted throughout campus — in dorms, apartments, Greek houses, and team houses. The night united an incredible mix of groups, including 11 Greek life organizations, 10 sports teams, and countless other clubs and communities. JHP even sent challah and wine to students studying abroad so they could celebrate from afar.

What Our Students Say

With the help of JHP, I was able to celebrate Shabbat for 1000 from Paris during my semester abroad. It was so nice to share our tradition with my roommates abroad and feel connected to the event on campus. No matter how far I am from school, I know I’ll always be a part of the JHP community.”

Jake Ziman, Class of 2027

Shabbat for 1k was a night to remember. The weather was nice so we set up the table outside. We did all of the prayers and hung out until late, meeting new people. We enjoyed delicious Jewish foods such as Challah. I cannot wait for the next Shabbat for 1k!”

Remi Badner, Class of 2029

As Jewish content chair, seeing Shabbat for 1K come to life, and so many people showing up to share a tradition that means so much to me was the most rewarding part of the planning.”

— Dani Itkin-Ofer, Class of 2029

Shabbat for 1k is always my favorite time of the year and I am so sad that I just had my last one! I loved getting to bring many different groups of people together to celebrate shabbat and share my Jewish heritage. It always means so much that I have the chance to do that because of JHP’s efforts. In the future after college, I hope to continue spreading Jewish light by carrying on this JHP tradition of hosting shabbat dinners with those around me!”

— Maddie Katz, Class of 2026
