Shabbat for 2,006 * (*that’s not a typo!)

March 2, 2016 by JHP

On Friday, February 26th, over 2,000 University of Pennsylvania students gathered together for Shabbat dinner, all recruited by the JHP at Penn interns.  This semi-annual event happens each semester at Penn and is joined by similar Shabbat dinners run on the other JHP campuses throughout their semesters.

Our Shabbat for 2,000 lead interns Dan Jacobs and Kacy Fishman worked hard to organize the dinners with different fraternities and sororities, sports teams, and dorms.

"I think Shabbat for 2,000 is a great opportunity for students because it allows them to take some time away from their hectic lives and sit down and enjoy a nice Shabbat dinner with friends.  I enjoy having something like this for students, because it doesn't matter if you celebrate Shabbat every single weekend, or have never sat down for Shabbat dinner before in your life - Shabbat for 2,000 is open to anyone who wants to be involved." Kacy Fishman, JHP@Penn Lead Intern.

95 Shabbat dinners took place, with a total of 2,006 people enjoying a Shabbat meal! In New York, our NYU students sat down to a Shabbat dinner of their own in solidarity with the event, and alumni dinners took place from New York to Louisiana.

Check out coverage of the fantastic event in the Jewish Exponent!
