Rosh Hashanah of Chassidism

December 20, 2016 by Sophia Winston

GOOD YOM TOV AND A SWEET NEW YEAR!

The 19th and 20th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev are celebrated as the "Rosh Hashanah of Chassidism." On this date, in the year 1798, the founder of Chabad Chassidism, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi (1745-1812), was freed from his imprisonment in czarist Russia. More than a personal liberation, this was a watershed event in the history of Chassidism, heralding a new era in the revelation of the "inner soul" and "light" of Torah.
Here is a thought from this philosophy which is also important for Chanukah: Darkness, no matter how ominous and intimidating, is not a thing or force: it is merely the absence of light. So light need not combat and overpower darkness in order to displace it -- where light is, darkness is not. A thimbleful of light will therefore banish a roomful of darkness.
For more on this topic you can watch this video clip of the Lubavitcher Rebbe o.b.m.
