Shabbat for 2,000 / Shabbos Unlimited (at UPenn) is held once each semester, it not only reinforces students’ Jewish identities, but it also helps create more understanding and acknowledgement of the Jewish culture and traditions. JHP provides all the food and Shabbos guidance, and students (Jewish and non-Jewish alike) host Shabbat dinners across campus, in their apartments, Greek houses, or at a JHP sponsored meal. This event allows students to be sharing a Shabbos dinner with friends all simultaneously at the same time, on the same night. We have had over 30,000 meals served since the event first began.
As Co-Vice Presidents of Jewish Content, we are thrilled to launch the new-and-improved Shabbat Unlimited! Shabbat Unlimited is an opportunity for an unlimited number of students across all ends of campus—in different clubs, organizations, and of different faiths—to come together with their friends and celebrate Shabbat. Joining together to embrace the spirit of Shabbat, eating challah, drinking wine, and relaxing with our friends, is an amazing way to strengthen our Penn community!”
This is my third year hosting a Shabbat for 2,000 dinner and I’ve always loved my experiences with friends! The people who help out with food distribution make everything so easy and I love the opportunity to teach friends each year about Shabbat and this community. ”
Shabbat for 2,000” is a program that I’ve participated in every semester that I’ve been at Penn so far, and it has been an incredible opportunity to bring interfaith work into my friendships.”
